Calming the Storm Within

Ecclesiastes 7:9

“Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the hearts of fools.”

I am someone who wears her heart on her sleeve and feels emotions deeply. I’ve learned that while passion can be a gift, it can also lead me astray when not rooted in Christ. Anger, especially, has this unruly ability to consume, to grow, and to destroy if left unchecked. For some, it comes in flashes, while for others like me, it brews quietly, gaining strength, much like a storm gathering on the horizon. I’ve come to recognize this storm within myself, knowing all too well how anger can threaten to take over and like a tornado, destroy everything in its path.

Thankfully, God’s word reminds us in Ecclesiastes 7:9 that anger is not meant to take up residence in our hearts—it is a weight we are called to release into His hands. When I begin to feel that familiar storm beginning to rise, I find solace in the simple yet powerful act of pausing. The deep breath I take is not just for myself, but an invitation for God to step in. In those moments, I seek His word, which provides me peace and comfort. I pray for His strength to replace my frustration, for His love to fill the spaces where anger seeks to take hold. It is not always an instant transformation, but each time I surrender my burden to Him, I find myself steadied by His grace.

God never intended for us to face our storms alone. Instead, He offers to stand beside us, ready to anchor us in His unwavering calm.  The journey to calming our inner storm begins with trusting that God’s hand is strong enough to hold us when we feel unstable, and that His love is deep enough to quiet our storm. Seeking God’s presence guides us back to a state of peace.

Next time you feel anger bubbling up, take a moment to turn to Him. Speak to Him openly, listen for His voice, and let His word guide you back to still waters.
