The Love of Others

Romans 12:10

“Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.”

There is nothing more heartwarming than having friends show up for you during a difficult time. When Joe and I headed to the ER for my upper abdominal pain, we prepared ourselves for a possible gallbladder removal. We sought strength and comfort in God, knowing that He had me and that no matter what, He would provide me with the best outcome.

As we sat in the examining room, waiting for the official diagnosis, one of my very special and dear friends showed up. She knew what it was like to be in the hospital, waiting for that diagnosis and she did not want Joe and I to face the wait alone. And on the day of my surgery, two more friends show up to sit with Joe and provide him prayers and comfort. All throughout my hospital stay and recovery, friends were continually reaching out and lifting us up in prayer. Their actions reminded me that love is something real and active, something that shows up when it’s needed most. Their kindness was God’s love in action and a tangible reminder of His presence in our lives.

The love we receive from others not only uplifts us but also calls us to action. It encourages us to reflect on how we can be vessels of God’s love in the lives of those around us. Romans 12:10 reminds us to “take delight in honoring each other”. This profound instruction challenges us to not simply love passively but to actively seek ways to serve, encourage, and uplift. It encourages us to go the extra mile and to find ways to uplift others – to take the time to be present, to listen, and to act as an instrument of God’s grace.

When we allow love to guide our actions, we begin to see opportunities for ministry in the everyday moments of life. A neighbor in need, a friend facing uncertainty, a stranger searching for hope—each situation is an invitation to reflect the love of Christ. By stepping into these opportunities, we not only bless others but also grow in our understanding of God’s love for us.

Therefore, let us be intentional in our acts of love. Let us practice listening with open hearts, serving with hands ready to give, and encouraging with words that breathe life and hope. In doing so, we participate in the transformative power of God’s love—a force capable of healing wounds, reconciling hearts, and bringing light to the darkest of places.
