Giving Thanks

Psalm 100:4

“Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and bless His name.”

Thanksgiving draws me into remembrance. I begin to recall the ways God has provided, protected, comforted, and sustained me—often in moments when I did not even realize how much I needed Him. Remembering does not ignore present challenges, but it anchors them in the larger story of God’s faithfulness. Praise rises more naturally when I remember that He has never failed to meet me where I am.

Psalm 100:4 gently invites me to pause and consider how I come before God. Not rushed, not burdened first by what feels lacking, but led by thanksgiving. Gratitude has a way of reordering the heart, of shifting my focus from what is unfinished to what has already been held by God’s care. When I choose to enter His presence with thanks, I am reminded of who God is and how faithfully He has walked with me through every season.

Lately, that gratitude has felt especially tangible as Joe and I prepare to open our home for our first Friendsgiving. There is something deeply humbling about gathering people around our table, knowing that what we have is not something we created on our own, but something God has generously given. Our home, our relationships, our ability to welcome others, all of it reflects God’s love and kindness. Hosting becomes the overflow of thanksgiving, a way of saying out loud that we recognize God’s provision and we are grateful for it.

This verse also reminds me that gratitude is meant to be shared. Some of the sweetest moments of Thanksgiving happen when friends are gathered together, recounting what God has done and listening to how He has been faithful in each life. Sitting together, laughing, reflecting, and giving thanks out loud turns ordinary moments into sacred ones. Faith is strengthened as stories are shared, and hearts are reminded that none of us walk alone.

In those moments, praise feels less like an obligation and more like an overflow. Conversations become reminders of grace. Stories turn into quiet testimonies. God meets us there, in shared meals, honest words, and simple joy, inviting us all into His presence together.

Entering God’s presence with thanksgiving also reshapes my posture in prayer. Instead of beginning with requests, I start with gratitude. I thank Him for what He has already done, for who He is, and for the people He has placed in my life. Blessing His name becomes a natural response rather than a forced one.

Psalm 100:4 teaches me that thanksgiving is a doorway. Whether I am alone in reflection or gathered around a table with friends, gratitude opens my heart to joy, trust, and a deeper awareness of God’s nearness. Today, I want to enter His gates with a thankful heart, cherishing His goodness and the gift of sharing it with others.
