Joy as Strength

Nehemiah 8:10

“Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

There are seasons when joy and sorrow quietly sit beside one another, and Nehemiah 8:10 meets me gently in that in-between space. It reminds me that God understands the complexity of the human heart – that we can be thankful and still feel the ache of what is missing. Recently, that truth became especially real. I was deeply grateful to spend Thanksgiving with friends, sharing warm food, laughter, and meaningful conversation. There was genuine joy in being surrounded by love and kindness, and I did not take that for granted. And yet, beneath that gratitude, there was a tender ache.

Both Joe and I felt the absence of certain family members we longed to be with. The table was full, but our hearts still noticed who wasn’t there. There were moments when laughter flowed easily, and moments when silence carried unspoken longing. That experience reminded me that joy does not cancel grief, and gratitude does not erase missing someone you love.

The joy of the Lord does not ask us to ignore our feelings or pretend that loss does not hurt. Instead, it strengthens us right in the middle of them. God’s joy gives us the grace to hold gratitude and grief together without being overwhelmed by either. It steadies us when emotions feel layered and complex. This kind of joy is not loud or performative; it is compassionate, patient, and deeply personal.

I am learning that God’s joy is not dependent on perfect circumstances or complete togetherness. It is rooted in His presence. Even when certain seats are empty, He is still near. Even when voices I wish I could hear are absent, He listens closely to every unspoken prayer. His joy becomes a quiet reassurance that I am held, that my story is still unfolding, and that love is not diminished by distance or time.

Sometimes I expect joy to feel celebratory or obvious, but often it arrives gently. It shows up as peace in the middle of longing. It looks like gratitude that coexists with tears. It whispers hope when the heart feels tender. Nehemiah 8:10 reminds me that God’s joy does not rush healing or dismiss sorrow, it supports us through it. And in that steady, faithful joy, we find the strength to keep moving forward, trusting that God is present in both what we have and what we miss.
