Galatians 6:3
“For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”
The other day as my husband Joe and I were doing our Bible study; we came across Galatians 6:3. As I read the verse, it struck me like a lightning bolt. The phrase “when he is nothing” boomed in my mind like the sound of a church bell. It was a wonderful reminder that we are to never be prideful for all of us are nothing – apart from God we are truly nothing.
It is God who has created and planned every moment of our existence, long before we even drew our first breath. Every success, every possession, every opportunity comes from His provision. Everything is according to His will. We are fully dependent on Him. Yet, in a world that often glorifies independence, self-sufficiency, and personal achievements, maintaining this perspective requires intentionality.
Galatians 6:3 challenges us to examine the role of pride in our lives. Pride can cloud our understanding of God’s sovereignty, leading us to believe that our successes stem from our own efforts alone. Yet, the verse calls us to not only to embrace the truth that apart from Him, we are nothing but also reminds us that humility is not just an ideal but a cornerstone of our faith.
As followers of Christ, we are called to walk humbly, giving thanks for God’s provision and trusting in His perfect plan. Humility is not a weakness or about belittling ourselves; rather it is about exalting God in all aspects of our lives. It is a strength provided to us that allows us to align with the truth of God’s Word. When we align our thoughts with His truth, we are free to focus on serving His kingdom wholeheartedly, knowing that our worth is found in Him alone.
As I reflect on Galatians 6:3, I am comforted by the beauty of dependence. It is a dependence that draws us closer to God, filling our hearts with gratitude, and equipping us to live lives full of purpose and joy. As we go throughout our day, let’s remind ourselves to walk humbly, surrendering our pride, as we trust in His perfect plan, and to give thanks for His provisions.
