Ephesians 1:4
“Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”
As Father’s Day comes and goes, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the influence and impact of our earthly fathers. For some, this reflection is filled with joy and gratitude, recalling moments of kindness, guidance, and unconditional love. For others, these memories may be bittersweet, marked by longing for something lost or perhaps never fully received.
My own story is one of complexity – of absence mingled with steadfast affection. My parents divorced when I was just three years old, and my mother took our family to New Jersey while my father remained in Texas. For years, I struggled to understand how someone so far removed from my daily life could still carry love for me. That doubt stayed with me well into adulthood, coloring how I saw fatherhood and relationships.
It was not until thirty years later, after my father’s passing, that I discovered the quiet depths of his love. Among his belongings, my half-brother found a photograph of me, tucked carefully in our father’s wallet. It was a quiet token of love that never wavered despite the distance. This simple yet profound gesture spoke volumes that through decades of separation, a father’s love endured.
As I thought about this, my own role as a parent came sharply into focus. My love for my children began long before they entered this world, before I felt them in my belly or held them in my arms. This kind of love—eternal, unconditional, and unshaken—reflects the love we are given by our Heavenly Father. Ephesians 1:4 reminds us that even before God created the world, He loved us and chose us. This is a love that transcends proximity, visibility, and our human understanding.
God, like my father holding onto my photograph, treasures and holds each of us close. His love is not bound by time, space, or circumstance. It is constant and unyielding. Even though we may not see Him with our physical eyes, His love manifests in our lives in countless ways. It comforts us in our solitude, astonishes us through the beauty of creation, and fills us with joy in our achievements. His love is a thread woven through each moment of our existence, binding us to Him in a way that nothing can sever it.
As you reflect on the love you’ve experienced from your earthly father—whether it was abundant, imperfect, or absent—consider the perfect and boundless love of your Heavenly Father. His love is not dependent on physical presence or visible acts; it existed for you even before the foundation of the world. Let this truth fill your heart with peace and gratitude.
