Who Is Shaping You?

Proverbs 13:20

“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

Every day, we are being shaped. The voices we choose to hear, the people we walk beside, and the habits we allow into our lives all leave their imprint on us, pressing against our hearts like hands on clay. Proverbs 13:20 reminds us of this truth and whether we notice it or not, our hearts are always being molded by the influences we allow in.

At the center of it all, both God and the enemy have a plan for our lives. God’s plan is to shape us into vessels of honor – filled with His Spirit, reflecting His glory, and set apart for His purpose. The enemy, however, works to twist that design. Through lies, fear, and compromise, he presses in, trying to mold us into something distorted and broken. Every choice we make reveals whose hands we are yielding to.

The image of the potter’s wheel captures this so well. Clay cannot shape itself. It must remain in the potter’s hands, soft and surrendered, to become what it was meant to be. In the steady rhythm of the wheel, the potter presses, smooths, and forms until a vessel of beauty emerges. Left on its own, the clay crumbles, but in the potter’s hands, it is transformed. In the same way, when our souls are anchored to Jesus, we are not left as raw material. Instead, we are shaped into vessels of grace, carefully crafted for His Kingdom.

But if we place ourselves on the wrong wheel – shaped by foolish influences, unhealthy voices, or the enemy’s lies – we will be pressed into patterns that lead only to harm. That is why anchoring ourselves to Christ is not optional; it is essential. He is the Potter, and we are the clay. Anchored in Him, we remain pliable, steady, and safe from being pulled off course by the currents of this world.

To walk with the wise is to walk with Jesus, the very embodiment of wisdom. In His hands, we are shaped into something eternal. The enemy may try to leave his mark, but in the care of the Master Potter, our lives are being formed into beauty, strength, and purpose.
