James 4:7
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
At first glance, James 4:7 may sound like a call to battle. It speaks of resisting the devil and standing firm against temptation. Yet before James tells us to resist, he tells us to submit. That order is important.
So often, we try to fight our struggles in our own strength. We wrestle with fear, temptation, anxiety, bitterness, or discouragement and convince ourselves that if we just try harder, we can overcome them. But sooner or later, we discover that our strength is not enough.
James reminds us that victory begins not with striving, but with surrender.
To submit ourselves to God means to place ourselves under His loving authority. It is a daily decision to trust His wisdom above our own, His plans above our preferences, and His timing above our impatience. Submission is not weakness. It is the quiet confidence that comes from knowing God sees what we cannot and knows what is best for us.
When we surrender to Him, we are no longer standing alone. We are placing ourselves under the care, protection, and guidance of a faithful Father.
Only then does James tell us to resist the devil.
Notice that our resistance is not rooted in self-confidence but in dependence upon God. The enemy loves to whisper lies about our identity, God’s goodness, and our future. He seeks to discourage, distract, and deceive. Yet when we stand firmly in God’s truth and remain close to Him, those lies lose their power.
The promise in this verse is remarkable: “He will flee from you.” Not because of who we are, but because of whose we are. The enemy cannot withstand a believer who is resting in God’s authority and standing upon His truth.
Perhaps today you are facing a battle that feels overwhelming. Maybe it is a temptation that keeps returning, a fear that will not let go, or a burden that weighs heavily on your heart. Before trying to fight it on your own, begin with surrender. Bring it before the Lord. Place it in His hands.
As you submit yourself to God, you will discover that true strength is found in dependence upon Him. And as you stand in His grace and truth, the enemy’s hold begins to loosen, and the peace of Christ takes its place.
