Makings Plans

Proverbs 19:21

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

When I read this verse, I often think about mine and Joe’s wedding day. Joe and I got married on a farm that had a beautiful barn for our reception, a gazebo and straw field for photos, a pole barn for food set up and a stone arch in the wood where Joe and I would have our ceremony. It was the perfect place for our “perfect” day.

For months I had planned every detail of our wedding and ceremony. I met with the caterer, the photographer, the decorator, and the hairstylist/make-up artist laying out my vision for the day and how I wanted everything to look. I spent hours creating the perfect playlist for the DJ and I even spent days designing the perfect seating chart. I even choose to do each table setting myself as I wanted everything to look exactly right.

Yes, you can say that I was a bit of a control freak back then, but I just wanted our day to be perfect. Well, I cannot say our day was perfect like I had planned, but it was perfect in every way that mattered. I was marrying my best friend and despite that our beautiful October fall wedding felt more like an August summer day, or that heat was melting our buttercream wedding cake, or that our guest decided to sit where they wanted because the wind had blown over the seating chart signs, or all the other little things that did not go accordingly to plan – Joe and I could not have asked for a better day.

God had brought us together so that we could join as one and be in unity with Him. He also provided us the opportunity to celebrate the day with loved ones and friends.

Reflecting on our wedding day, most of it is a blur except for the ceremony, where Joe and I focused on what truly mattered: our love and God’s presence in our lives. I am so thankful that God’s hand was in it all and that He helped us keep our focus, reminding us that day was never supposed to be about the table centerpieces or the food, but about His love for us and our love for one another.

Proverbs 19:21 reminds me that while it is okay to make detailed plans, we must seek God first to make sure our plans are aligned with His will and His purpose. When we fully embrace and follow God path for our lives, we experience a profound sense of joy and peace.
