Lavished With Love

 1 John 3:1

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

There are many ways we describe love in our world today. We use the word to express affection for family, appreciation for friends, or enjoyment of the things that bring us happiness. Yet the love of God is something far deeper than the love we often experience in everyday life. It is steady, unconditional, and far greater than anything we could ever earn.

The apostle John invites us to pause and truly consider this truth when he writes, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us.” The word lavished suggests abundance—something poured out generously and freely. God’s love is not given in small portions or carefully measured out. It is given fully, freely, and continually.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this love is that it changes our identity. John reminds us that through God’s love we are called His children. This means we are not simply distant followers or observers of God’s work. We are welcomed into His family. We are known, cared for, and deeply valued by the One who created us.

Yet many of us struggle to fully receive this truth. We often measure ourselves by our failures, our weaknesses, or the expectations we believe we must meet. In those moments, it can be easy to forget that God’s love does not depend on our ability to be perfect. His love flows from His own character.

When we begin to truly understand this, it brings freedom. Instead of striving to earn God’s approval, we can rest in the knowledge that we are already loved. Instead of carrying the weight of proving our worth, we can live with gratitude for the grace we have been given.

God’s love also transforms how we live each day. When we recognize that we are deeply loved by Him, our hearts begin to soften toward others. We become more patient, more compassionate, and more willing to extend grace. The love we receive from God becomes the love we share with the world around us.

Today, take a moment to pause and reflect on the depth of God’s love for you. It is not distant or uncertain. It is constant, generous, and freely given. And because of that love, you are not only known by God—you are welcomed as His child.
