Building One Another Up

1 Thessalonians 5:11

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”

Encouragement is rarely loud or dramatic. More often, it unfolds in quiet spaces—a thoughtful message sent at just the right time, a whispered prayer offered in faith, a listening ear that refuses to rush away. It is the intentional choice to notice someone’s effort and speak life into it. It is recognizing weariness in another and gently reminding them they are not alone. Scripture does not treat encouragement as optional; it presents it as essential to the life of a believing community. You were never meant to grow in isolation.

Perhaps you underestimate the power of your words. It is easy to assume they are small or insignificant. But a single sentence spoken in kindness can steady a trembling heart. A reminder of God’s faithfulness can shift someone’s entire perspective. Encouragement is not flattery or shallow positivity; it is strengthening someone with truth. It is helping them stand taller in their calling when doubt tries to make them shrink back.

During my time at the Christian Product Expo, I experienced this truth in a fresh way. In the middle of conversations about books and publishing, I encountered simple, sincere words that strengthened my heart. A fellow author sharing appreciation for my testimony. A quiet affirmation of their journey and that faithfulness matters more than visible outcomes. A shared prayer between booth spaces. None of it was flashy, yet it steadied me. In those moments, I realized how deeply encouragement sustains obedience. It builds courage in places we didn’t realize were trembling.

“Build one another up” carries intentionality. Building requires presence. It asks you to slow down enough to notice when someone is struggling. It calls you to choose patience when someone stumbles and to celebrate progress even when it feels small. Sometimes building up looks like gently reminding a friend who they are in Christ when they have forgotten. Other times, it means quietly carrying part of their burden through prayer.

So pause for a moment. Who has God placed in your life right now that needs encouragement? Whose faith feels fragile? Who is walking through something unseen? Encouragement does not require perfect phrasing – only a willing and attentive heart.

There is a quiet beauty in this rhythm: as you strengthen others, you are strengthened too. Community flourishes where encouragement flows freely. Grace is given, and grace is received. And in that exchange, the body of Christ grows steadier, stronger, and more reflective of His gentle, faithful love.
