Choosing Kindness

Colossians 3:12

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Kindness is often found in the smallest moments.

It’s the smile offered to a stranger, the encouraging text sent at just the right time, the patient response instead of a sharp one, or the willingness to simply sit with someone who is hurting. These moments may seem ordinary, but in God’s hands, they become extraordinary expressions of His love.

I find it interesting that when Paul encourages believers to “clothe yourselves,” kindness is woven into the very fabric of the Christian life. It’s not presented as an occasional act we choose when it’s convenient. It’s something we intentionally put on every single day.

But before Paul ever tells us to be kind, he reminds us why we can be.

“As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved…”

Those words change everything.

Our kindness doesn’t begin with our personality or our ability to be patient with difficult people. It begins with God’s kindness toward us. Before we ever extended grace to someone else, God first extended His grace to us. Before we loved Him, He loved us. Before we showed mercy, He lavished mercy upon us.

The more deeply I understand how kind God has been to me, the more naturally kindness begins to overflow into the lives of others.

Yet I’ll admit, kindness isn’t always easy.

It’s easy to be kind when life is going well and people are easy to love. It’s much harder when we’re tired, disappointed, misunderstood, or carrying burdens no one else can see. Those are often the very moments when our hearts are tempted to respond with frustration instead of compassion.

Perhaps that’s why Paul describes kindness as something we “clothe” ourselves with. Just as we intentionally choose what we’ll wear each morning, we must intentionally choose kindness. It rarely happens by accident. It is a daily decision to allow the Holy Spirit to shape our words, our attitudes, and our responses.

I’ve learned that kindness isn’t weakness. It isn’t pretending everything is fine or avoiding difficult conversations. True biblical kindness is strength that has been surrendered to Christ. It reflects His heart. It looks beyond ourselves and seeks the good of another person, even when it’s inconvenient.

The beautiful thing about kindness is that we often never know its full impact. A gentle word may restore someone’s hope. A simple invitation may change the direction of a person’s life. A small act of compassion may become the very evidence someone needed to believe that God sees them.

Today, ask God to help you wear kindness well. You may never realize how one encouraging word, one patient response, or one thoughtful gesture becomes part of the story God is writing in someone else’s life.

After all, we don’t choose kindness simply because people deserve it. We choose kindness because we have first been shown the immeasurable kindness of Christ. And when His kindness fills our hearts, it naturally begins to overflow into the world around us.
