Luke 2:19
“But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”
There is something quietly beautiful about Mary’s response to the first Christmas. In the midst of shepherds’ stories, angelic announcements, and the overwhelming reality of holding the Savior in her arms, she did not rush to explain or fully understand it all. Instead, she treasured it. She held the moments gently. She pondered them in her heart.
As I reflect on Christmases past, I’m struck by how quickly the season often moves. We rush from gathering to gathering, from celebration to responsibility, from joy to exhaustion. And before we know it, Christmas has passed, leaving behind memories that can feel blurred by busyness. Mary’s posture has invited me to slow down – to look back and remember with intention rather than hurry on too quickly.
There are pieces of Christmas that linger long after the decorations are put away. Quiet moments of connection. A meaningful conversation. A prayer whispered in the stillness of the night. There are also tender moments – absences felt more deeply, memories stirred, emotions that surfaced unexpectedly. Like Mary, I’m learning that not every moment needs to be resolved. Some are meant to be held, revisited, and gently carried forward.
For me, treasuring means giving myself permission to sit with what was. To acknowledge both the joy and the ache without rushing to move on. It means recognizing that God often speaks not only through grand moments, but through quiet ones we only fully understand in hindsight. Mary didn’t have clarity about what lay ahead, but she trusted that God was at work in what she had already seen.
Looking back on Christmas past, I’m reminded that God’s faithfulness is often revealed over time. What once felt confusing or incomplete may now be seen as part of a larger story. Treasuring these moments helps me notice patterns of grace – how God showed up, sustained me, or quietly carried me when I didn’t realize I needed it.
This verse invites me into a gentler rhythm. Instead of rushing ahead, it encourages reflection. Instead of dismissing what feels small, it reminds me that God often does His deepest work in the hidden places of the heart.
As the season fades into memory, I want to follow Mary’s example. To treasure what God has done. To ponder where He was present. To hold those moments close, trusting that even now, God is still weaving meaning, hope, and purpose from what has already been given.
