Galatians 5:25
“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”
There is a quiet rhythm to walking with God – one that isn’t rushed, forced, or loud. It feels more like a gentle pace, steady and intentional, where each step is guided rather than driven. Paul’s words in Galatians invite us into that kind of life: not only one sustained by the Spirit, but one that moves in harmony with Him.
To live by the Spirit means our very life – our breath, our hope, our identity – comes from Him. It is not something we manufacture or maintain through effort alone. It is given, received, and sustained by His presence within us. Yet Paul does not stop there. He urges us to keep in step, suggesting a daily, ongoing attentiveness to the Spirit’s leading.
Keeping in step requires awareness. It calls for a heart that is willing to slow down and notice, to listen beyond the noise of our own thoughts and desires. Often, we find ourselves rushing ahead, driven by urgency, expectations, or fear of falling behind. Other times, we hesitate, lingering in uncertainty or distraction. In both cases, we move out of rhythm. But the Spirit neither rushes nor abandons; He leads with perfect wisdom and timing.
Walking in step with the Spirit is not about rigid precision or flawless obedience. It is about alignment – a continual returning to His pace and direction. It is learning to pause before reacting, to choose gentleness when impatience rises, and to trust His leading even when the path feels unclear. His guidance is often quiet, yet it carries a steady assurance that anchors the soul.
There is a deep peace that unfolds when we release the need to control the journey. The Spirit’s rhythm may feel slower than we expect, but it is never without purpose. In His timing, there is grace for each moment, strength for each step, and clarity for each decision. Even when we stumble or drift, He faithfully draws us back, restoring our footing and inviting us again into His presence.
To keep in step with the Spirit is to walk closely, attentively, and trustingly – resting in the assurance that His way is both faithful and full of peace.
