Abiding Love

1 John 4:16

“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

There is a difference between knowing about God’s love and truly abiding in it. John doesn’t just say we acknowledge it; he says we come to know and believe it. This kind of knowing is intimate, lived, and transforming. It reshapes not only how we see God, but how we love others. And as that love takes root within us, it begins to form something deeper – something stronger – a call to love fiercely.

To abide in love means to remain, to dwell, to stay rooted in the truth that God is love. Not that He simply gives love, but that love is His very nature. And when we truly begin to believe that it awakens something in us. Loving fiercely is no longer optional or circumstantial; it becomes the natural response to being loved so completely. It is not driven by feelings that come and go, but by a steady, anchored truth.

Loving fiercely does not always look loud or dramatic. Often, it is quiet and steadfast. It chooses patience when it would be easier to walk away. It extends grace when it feels undeserved. It stays present when discomfort tempts us to withdraw. This kind of love is not fragile; it is resilient because it is rooted in something far greater than ourselves. It reflects the love we have received – a love that did not turn away, even at the cross.

As we continue to abide in Him, our capacity to love in this way grows. We begin to see people differently – not as interruptions or challenges, but as souls deeply loved by God. Our hearts become more tender, more willing, more open. Prayer becomes an extension of that fierce love, as we carry others before the Lord with sincerity and compassion, trusting Him to move in ways we cannot.

There is also a quiet courage in loving fiercely. It requires surrender – laying down our need to protect ourselves, to keep score, or to love only when it feels safe. Instead, we trust that the love of God within us is enough. Enough to sustain us, enough to guide us, and enough to pour out into the lives around us.

And in that, we find something beautiful: we are no longer striving to create love on our own. We are simply abiding in the One who is love, allowing His fierce, unwavering love to flow through us – steady, sacrificial, and alive in every part of our lives.
