Through the Eyes of a Mother

Last night, I watched the movie “The Passion of Christ” for the very first time. As expected, my heart simply broke for Jesus as I watched Him suffering in the garden, during the beatings, as he carried the cross through town, and as He took His last breath on the cross. But what I did not expect were the feelings I felt for Jesus’ mother, Mary. As a mother with a son of my own, I can remember times when my son was hurt or faced challenges, and my heart would just ache for him, knowing that there was nothing I could do to make the situation better. As I watched Mary, I could only imagine her pain, sorrow, and despair. The depths to which Mary’s heart must have ached and shattered with every lash, every blow, and every nail that pierced her son’s body is unfathomable.

The bond between a mother and her child is one of the most profound connections in existence. From the moment a mother learns of her child’s presence, an unbreakable bond is formed. This bond is nurtured through the months of pregnancy, strengthened with each heartbeat, and solidified with the first cry. A mother’s love is unconditional, selfless, and eternal. Mary’s love for her son exemplifies the embodiment of maternal love. Her unwavering dedication and support throughout Jesus’ life reflect the depth of her devotion.

As I reflected on the cruelty that Mary witnessed against her son, I noticed how her faith and trust in God, amidst her suffering and emotional pain, never wavered. Mary’s faith shone like a beacon of light in the darkest of times. Her unshakeable belief in God’s divine plan comforted her heart. Mary was able to put her heartache aside and accept that her son’s sacrifice was necessary for the fulfillment of the divine prophecy.

I truly believe that through her acceptance of God’s will, from the time the angel appeared to her – to the birth of her son in a manger – to the crucifixion of her son, God provided Mary the strength she needed so that she could eventually endure the unimaginable. Mary never turned away or rejected God’s plan. Instead, she remained steadfast in her faith. It was her unshakeable faith and trust in God’s divine plan that allowed her to navigate through the storm of emotions and emerge stronger. Mary’s faith was her anchor, grounding her amidst the chaos and providing her with the courage to face what was in front of her.

Reflecting on my own experiences as a mother, I am reminded of the countless moments where I have felt an overwhelming sense of love and protection for my son. From the very first time I held him in my arms, I knew that my life was irrevocably changed. Just like Mary, the bond I share with my son is deep and absolute. Every laugh, every tear, every milestone he reaches touches my heart profoundly.

There have also been times when my son faced difficulties and challenges that left me feeling helpless. One particular instance that stands out is when my son was struggling with a difficult decision about his future. He was anxious and uncertain, and as a mother, I wanted to guide him and alleviate his doubts. However, I realized that I needed to let him navigate this path on his own, offering only my support and love from the sidelines. It wasn’t easy to step back, but I knew it was necessary for his growth and development. It was during this time that I too had growth. I was able to find strength in my faith, much like Mary did. I was able to understand that sometimes the best way to support my son was to provide him with unwavering love and encouragement while trusting God’s plan for him.

Moments like these have taught me the power of unconditional love and the importance of faith. I have learned that my son’s journey is his own, and my role is to be a source of support and strength. Through my faith, I have discovered the resilience needed to endure the challenges that come with motherhood. Just as Mary’s faith anchored her amidst her trials, my faith has provided me with the courage to face the uncertainties of being a mother.

In the reflection of my experiences, I see how Mary’s unwavering love for her son and her steadfast faith are qualities that I want to strive to embody as a mother. The journey of motherhood, with its joys and sorrows, is a testament to the profound connection between a mother and her child. Through faith, love, and resilience, we can navigate the storms of life and emerge stronger.

Mary’s story highlights the timeless truth of maternal love. It is a love that endures, a love that supports, and a love that transcends all challenges. Through the eyes of a mother, we witness the true essence of strength, faith, and unconditional love.

Reflecting on Mary’s story, what qualities of hers do you admire the most, and why? In what ways can a story like Mary’s encourage us to approach life’s difficulties with greater love and compassion? How do you think your faith could help you navigate life’s most challenging moments? Please share in the comments.
