More Than Lights on Trees

John 1:4–5

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

As the Christmas season begins, light starts appearing everywhere – on rooftops, in windows, along streets and trees. It’s beautiful, and yet it’s easy for that light to become background noise as schedules fill, expectations rise, and the season moves quickly. In the midst of it all, John’s words gently call my heart back to the true Light – the One we are celebrating in the first place.

There are seasons when darkness feels close. It doesn’t always come as despair; sometimes it looks like distraction, exhaustion, or quiet heaviness carried beneath the surface. Christmas can magnify that tension. Joy and sorrow often sit side by side this time of year. In those moments, I am reminded that life itself is found in Jesus, and that His life shines with a light the darkness cannot overcome.

This light is not loud or demanding. It doesn’t compete for attention. It simply shines – steady, faithful, present. As the world grows brighter with decorations and celebration, I’m learning to ask myself where my eyes are resting. Am I drawn more to the noise of the season, or to the quiet presence of Christ? His light doesn’t rush me. It meets me gently, right where I am, illuminating my heart without exposing it to shame.

What comforts me most is that His light shines in the darkness, not just after it fades. That means I don’t have to have everything figured out before I come to Him this season. I don’t have to feel cheerful or complete. His presence is enough. The darkness may feel strong at times, but it is not victorious. It does not win. It cannot extinguish what God has already declared as life.

As Christmas approaches, I want to be intentional not to lose sight of that truth. Jesus is not just part of the season – He is the reason light exists at all. His life brings hope into weary places, peace into anxious hearts, and warmth into spaces that feel cold or empty. Even when circumstances remain unchanged, His light helps me see differently. It reminds me that God is near, active, and faithful.

This season, I want to slow down and let His light guide me. To choose presence over pressure. To remember that no matter how dark the world may feel, the Light has come – and it continues to shine, unwavering and undefeated.
