Romans 8:28
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Life often surprises us with unexpected challenges that can leave us feeling lost or uncertain.
Earlier in the week, I met up with my daughter so that we could have a vehicle title notarized. For months my relationship with my daughter had been a little rocky but through prayers, I was starting to see slivers of hope that we may fully reconcile.
As I headed out to meet her, I could feel the anxiety welling up in me. Please, please let our meeting go well, I kept thinking to myself.
While I was excited to see her, I was also on eggshells. I just did not want to say or do anything that would upset her. Overall, my hope was for the entire encounter to be pleasant.
Unfortunately, that was not the case, as I did something that really upset her and we ended up departing on bad terms. As the experience replayed over and over in my mind, so did Romans 8:28, which brought me much comfort.
In life, we are never promised that every situation we face will make us feel good or make sense in the moment, or even days later. Sometimes those moments may break our hearts, test our patience, or stretch our faith. I know that day, God was stretching me spiritually for I did not let hurt or anger seep in. Instead, He helped me stay calm and silent. I knew that He was standing beside me, providing me the strength and comfort, reminding me that I can trust His plan as He works ALL things for good, not just some.
While I did not fully understand why, what I had thought was progress, now seemed like a dead end, I knew from Romans 8:28, that I could find assurance that all things, whether joyful or painful, are being woven together by Him for a greater purpose.
Because of this, I believe that God is working on both mine and my daughter’s heart. That instead of slapping on a Band-Aid in the moment, He is working on healing both of our hearts before we reconcile and for this, I am truly grateful.
