Ecclesiastes 3:1
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
Life is full of rhythms we cannot control. The sun rises and sets; summer gives way to fall; joy gives way to sorrow, and sorrow eventually makes room for joy again. The words of Ecclesiastes invite us to see our lives not as random, chaotic moments, but as part of God’s carefully woven tapestry.
It is easy to welcome the seasons that feel light—the times of growth, celebration, and blessing. But the harder seasons, those marked by waiting, loss, or uncertainty, often leave us restless and questioning. I find myself in such a season now, waiting on God’s direction with my writing and my next steps. I long to know what I should pour my heart into—whether it’s a sequel, a completely different book altogether, a devotional, or a Bible study. So many projects have been placed on my heart, yet I do not know which one He is calling me to begin first. The waiting is uncomfortable, because I crave clarity and forward motion. Yet Scripture reminds me that even this in-between space has a purpose under heaven.
The truth found in Ecclesiastes 3:1 steadies me when I want to rush ahead. What feels like a delay in my story may actually be preparation in God’s design. He is not wasting this season but using it to refine my heart, deepen my trust, and align my desires with His will.
When I look back, I can see how God has already proven Himself faithful in other waiting seasons. There was the long season of waiting while Joe got the help he needed, a time that tested my endurance but ultimately brought healing and hope. There was also the season of searching for a home, when doors kept closing and I wondered if we would ever find the right place. Yet in His timing, God provided – meeting us not just with answers, but with blessings far richer than I imagined. What seemed like delay became preparation. What felt like uncertainty turned into testimony.
Those memories remind me that His wisdom allows each season to serve its role in our story, even when we cannot see it in the moment. The challenge is surrender – choosing to trust Him not only on the mountaintop of joy but also in the valley of uncertainty. Trust means releasing the pressure to control outcomes and timelines. It means resting in the truth that His presence redeems the waiting and carries us through the unknown.
