Not By Our Own Understanding

Proverbs 3:5

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

There are moments when trusting God feels natural, almost instinctive. And then there are seasons when trust feels like a conscious surrender – one that requires me to loosen my grip on what I thought life would look like. Proverbs 3:5 meets me most honestly in those moments. It gently reminds me that faith is not about having clarity, but about choosing trust when clarity is absent.

Leaning on my own understanding has always felt safer. I like plans. I like explanations. I like knowing where things are headed and how they will unfold. But God, in His kindness, has often led me in directions I did not expect and would not have chosen on my own. At first, that unfamiliarity feels unsettling. My instinct is to question, to analyze, to figure things out before taking the next step.

This verse invites me to do something different. It calls me to trust God with all my heart—not just the parts that feel comfortable or make sense. Trusting Him fully means releasing my need to control outcomes and acknowledging that His perspective is far greater than mine. It’s admitting that while my understanding is limited, His wisdom is complete.

Surrender is not passive. It is an intentional act of faith. It means choosing to follow even when the path feels unclear, believing that God is not only aware of where He is leading me, but that He is actively guiding each step. I’ve learned that when God steers me in new directions, it’s not to disorient me, but to shape me. He sees what lies ahead—growth I need, healing I haven’t imagined, and purposes still unfolding.

There is a quiet peace that comes when I stop fighting for understanding and start resting in trust. Surrender doesn’t erase uncertainty, but it changes how I carry it. Instead of holding fear tightly, I place it in God’s hands. Instead of insisting on my own way, I learn to follow His lead.

Proverbs 3:5 reminds us that trusting God is not about abandoning thought or wisdom; it’s about recognizing the source of true wisdom. When we release our needs to understand everything, we create space for God to work in ways we could never orchestrate ourselves.
