Behind the Mic
Last week, I had the opportunity to do something I never imagined I would be doing a few years ago – I spent three days in a recording studio narrating the audiobook version of my book. Even as I write these words, it stills feel a little surreal. The experience was exciting, exhausting, rewarding, and at times even intimidating. Sitting behind a microphone for hours at a time, carefully reading every sentence and trying to communicate the heart and emotion behind the words was a much bigger undertaking than I expected. Yet throughout the entire process, I found myself overwhelmed with gratitude. Not simply because I was recording an audiobook, but because God had made a way for it to happen.
There was a time when creating an audiobook felt completely out of reach. Like many dreams and ideas, it sat quietly in the background as something I hoped might happen someday. Yet God, in His faithfulness, provided exactly what was needed at exactly the right time. The opportunity itself, the resources to make it happen, and the people who helped bring it together all felt like reminders of His goodness and provision. As I sat in the studio each day, I couldn’t help but marvel at how God often answers prayers in ways we never expect.
What surprised me most, however, was not the recording process itself. It was having to revisit a book I wrote nearly two years ago. That may not sound unusual, but it felt surprisingly emotional. When I originally wrote the book, I was in a different season of life. Different circumstances surrounded me. Different prayers occupied my heart. Different lessons were being learned. As I sat in that recording booth reading page after page, it felt almost like opening a time capsule. I wasn’t simply reading words on a page; I was revisiting a version of myself from two years earlier.
Some passages made me smile because I remembered exactly what was happening in my life when I wrote them. Other sections reminded me of struggles I had forgotten and prayers I barely remembered praying. There were moments when I found myself thinking, “I remember writing this,” and other moments when I thought, “I needed to hear this again.” In many ways, God used the audiobook recording process not only to revisit the book but also to remind me of His faithfulness throughout the journey.
As I reflected on those three days, I realized how easy it is to remember the big things God does in our lives while forgetting the smaller ways He answers prayer. We tend to remember the major breakthroughs, the dramatic provisions, the miracles, and the life-changing moments. Those are the stories we tell. They become markers of God’s faithfulness that we revisit again and again.
But what about the little prayers?
What about the quiet prayers whispered before falling asleep? The prayers offered during difficult seasons when we simply ask God for strength to get through another day? The prayers for wisdom, peace, patience, guidance, or courage? What about the prayers we prayed months or years ago that seemed insignificant at the time?
As I listened to my own words and reflected on the season in which they were written, I began noticing just how many of those small prayers God had answered. Not always dramatically. Not always immediately. But faithfully. Some prayers had been answered so gradually that I never even noticed the answer arriving. God had quietly been working behind the scenes, changing my heart, opening doors, providing opportunities, and teaching lessons one step at a time.
When you look back over the last few years of your life, where can you see God’s faithfulness most clearly? What prayers were on your heart two or three years ago? How has God answered them, changed them, or used them to shape you? What blessings in your life have become so familiar that you no longer see them as answers to prayer? Please share in the comments.
